“What is it?” she asked uneasily “you bury those owls,” Mullet Finger said, “ you gotta bury me too.” “But no I love birds! All birds!” this quote takes place at the public event for Mother Paula’s. Mullet Fingers has buried himself on the site. He speaks up to get the publics’ attention. The she in the beginning of the quote is mother Paula asking what the head out of the ground is. She says that she loves birds but I don’t think that she knows that there are birds on the property.

week 5 # 1

Looking up at a poster on my wall. The water is bright blue with a cloud or two in the sky. Shawls hang from a cloths line on the beach. The shadow is cast on the beach. Wishing I could be there. The desk has only a few things on it. There is a white piece of paper that has the name Amanda written in the top left corner. On top of the paper there are all sorts of wires. One black wire connects the speakers to my computer. The white looks as though it is a tangled mess but the end plugs into my computer. The desk lamp brightly shines on the computer screen. Now thinking about what other homework I have. On to math.

week 4 # 2

I was blown away what could I say
It all seemed to make sense
The music plays in the background
Kerstin’s fingers move swiftly across the keys
As she types away
She laughs at something someone said and types back
She chews her gum and blows a big bubble
It pops and she sucks it backs in
A new song
If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody died
As the music plays softly in the background
Kerstin blows another bubble about the size of her face
You should know what its like (what its like)
What its like (what its like)
The music fades out

eoc-sabogate paper

Could you imagine walking down the street in your new mink coat and having someone come up behind you and spray paint it? In the 1990s this act of eco sabotage used to be done on a daily basis because they were protesting minks being killed for someone to wear. Eco sabotage is every crime or act done to emphasis the importance of the environment or certain animals. As shown by Carl Hiaasen in Hoot, eco-sabotage, the destruction of property by vandals, is ethically justified in certain situations and can also be effective in solving some environmental issues.
In hoot, a young boy named Mullet Fingers commits eco-sabotage when he learns that Mother Paula’s All American Pancake House will be constructed on the land where there are borrowing owls. Unlike the Eco-saboteurs that caused million of dollars in damage, Mullet Fingers commits innocent acts of sabotage at the construction site. He has done acts like pulling out the survey stacks, putting alligators in the toilets, and removing the seats on the bulldozers. All of these acts cost little to no money, only aggravation to the construction manager and loss of time to the construction of the pancake house. Eco-sabotage can be justified because it is a legitimate cause. Using Hoot as an example, all of Mullet Fingers actions are towards saving the owl’s environment and no one gets severely hurt. Even though Mullet Fingers uses cotton mouth snakes he admits that they cant “…hurt a flea…” because he tapes “… their mouths shut.” (Hiaasen 122) Mullet Fingers had put out the snakes to scare the Rottweilers that were guarding the construction site. Once the dogs were on longer paying attention to the construction site Mullet Fingers was then able enter the site and continue he acts of eco-sabotage.
There can be times when eco-sabotage groups take their actions a little to far. One way that their actions could go to far is if someone or thing was endangered. There was an act of eco-sabotage reported by a man named Phil Hawkins in Portland, Oregon that put people endanger. Because Hawkins is a fisherman he has to worry about “…packing the right rod, the right flies, the right equipment and food …” but he never dreamed of having to “…worry about spikes or nails in the river…” that would tear his boat up. Another action that crosses the line of being acceptable is when it begins to cost massive amounts of money to repair the damage done. One of the most costly anti-furs acts taken by A.L.F. was committed on November 12, 2007. At the Alaskan Fur Co. the eco-saboteurs throw flaming devise in the window. The devise destroyed the first floor of the two-story building causing 2.25 million dollars in damage. Eco-sabotage groups have taken their acts to far when innocent people get caught in the middle of their actions. The A.L.F. wanted to bomb a professor from UCLA’s house for doing animals testing. Then A.L.F. apparently left the “ Molotov cocktail” at the wrong house. Instead leaving the bomb at the professor’s house they left it at his next-door neighbor, a seventy-year-old lady’s, house. The bomb did not function properly but if it had, the house would have blown.
Eco-sabotage can be effective at getting ones point across to those who wont listen or talk out the problem. “ Bush rolled back every environmental protection,” Wade said. “No one was responding” A 19 year old, named John Wade, at Mary Washington Collage felt that Gorge Bush wasn’t doing anything to help save the environment so he took action. He damaged equipment at Short Pump Town Center, sports cars (SUV) at a Ford dealership, and windows of McDonalds restaurants. As a result he was put in prison for the next three years following his act of eco-sabotage. Although sent to jail he made a big statement in Richmond, Virginia Eco-sabotage can be very effective in terms of stopping what the eco-sabotage groups are protesting. Once the project is stopped the people behind the project reassessed how important their project is in comparison to the damage done if the project were carried out. An example of this is when people spike trees. Spiking the tree results in the logger having to stop cutting because their machinery will break. Although the loggers may not realize the damage that will be caused to the environment they are no longer cutting down the trees.
Eco-sabotage is something that happens all the time but can be viewed in many different ways. As stated above, eco-sabotage can be warranted in certain situations and can also be effective. As shown in hoot ecosabogate make consist of more innocent acts that do not cause damage or result in millions of dollars lost. In the past few years more drastic measures have been taken. Have been effective even though they caused much damage. Groups like Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front have the drive to commit these acts because it is all for saving the environment.

week 4 # 1

The music booms on the other side of the wall
Voice of the singer is muffled
Making it hard to make out the song
The laughing gets louder and softer
Making it sound like a song
The main melody is the loud laughter
The counter part is the giggling in the background
Just as the song, the chuckles are stifled

A blanket covers the world around me
This blanket covers the ground
And somehow is neatly laid upon the roof tops
It sparkles like a diamond
But is Soft as velvet
I just want to curl up under my covers
And hide away from the cold winter whether

“Roy stood rooted in the center of the road. He had an important decision to make and quickly. From one direction came the police car; running in the other direction were his two best friends.”

This quote is relevant to the book and to real life situations. Roy couldn’t decide whether to flag down the police officer to get them to the hospital faster or whether to run after what were closest to his friends. He decided to run after his friends and stick with them.

I read an article about eco sabotage that took place Portland Oregon. It was about the animal liberation front and it talked about how they did any act of eco sabotage. They spray painted the car and garage of a employ that worked at Wachovia. “This is a warning to Wachovia,” the statement said. “Sell your shares in GSK or the ALF will continue to target the homes and property of your employees.”

Another article has a list of eco sabotage actions. One of the examples was talking about how First Earth raided a vaccine facility and rescued 150 minks. Another story that was listed was about how they again saved minks. This time they saved 5,000 minks and 4,500 other animals.

The last story talks about yet another act of eco sabotage. This one talks about how a company is building pipelines. The article does not state where this is happening it just says that they are going to build pipelines for gas. In efforts to try to stop this people from first earth are sitting on the machinery so that they can’t work. http://earthfirst.org.uk/actionreports/node/2500

week 2 # 2

I walk into the common room
And the T.V. blurts out we did it.
As I look to see what show was playing
It was the real world
The show is put on hold to show some ads
The microwave begins to beep
That means that someone’s food is done
I look over and Edith has cooked Easy Mac
Sang with her red rimmed glasses
Sprawled out on the cough
The show comes back on
After about 5 minutes of ads
Kyle comes into the common room
“It’s 10:30 in room time”
Sang turns off the TV
We then go to our rooms.

brainstorm

For my paper topic I was thinking that I could combine paper topic number one with tree because they are similar and trying to display the same message. I feel that there are certain times where eoc-sabotage could be a very affective approach to solving some environmental problems. There are times when someone is doing something to the environment that is just not right and it may be that the only way to deal with the issue is to use eco-sabotage. One example of this is in the book hoot. The construction manager, Curly, knows that there are owl burrows on the property that he plans to build on. He is more concerned about getting the pancake house built then whether the owls survive. Because of the mans attitude if one tried to convince him to not build on that construction sight, just through a simple conversation it wouldn’t go over so well. This would be an instance where the only way to get him from building on top of the owls would be to use eco-sabotage. I also feel that there is nothing wrong with environmental protests as long as it is not hurting anyone or thing. A protest like spiking trees is perfectly fine because the tree is not affected in a bad way by the spikes and it is also not hurting anyone else. The only thing it does is makes it so that you can’t cut down the trees because it would ruin your blade.

Walking around town. There is an old yellow building. The sign on the side says library hours. Entering the building I hear people talking. Downstairs there are two separate rooms. One room is meant for children and the other is meant for young adults. A off white table has a stack of books on it. The top story is the tree little pigs. Now in a different part of town. The sand squeaks under my shoes as I walk. Down the street there is a dunkin’ donunts. Upon entering the dunkin’ donuts I hear “ sorry we are all out of that” the old man with gray hair thought of something else to get instead and ordered that. The little kid is deciding what he wants. He points with excitement, “ I want that one” although he cannot pronounce the name of the donut he begins to spell the letters on the name card. C-h-o- c- o- l- a- t- e…” the little boy got just what he asked for. As I was trying to cross the street I noticed that there was a build – upon sand where the grain was. The sand was not as pretty as the sand that u find at the beach. This sand was a dirty gray color with some brown dirt mixed in it. After standing there for what seemed like forever someone finally let me cross the street. When i got back to the van everyone was waiting there except of r Tom Morgan. The clock changed from 2:26 to 2:27. We still had three minutes until we had to be back at the van.
